Winter Maintenance Tips: Keeping your gear in top shape for a high-performance spring season.
Winter has certainly taken hold throughout New Zealand. At the end of every winter season, we field questions from farmers about how to get their spring implements back into working order after sitting still in the cold for months.
While it may be the last thing on your mind (especially after a day of feeding out in the rain with mud up to your gumboots), performing some routine maintenance checks throughout the periods of low-use and low temperatures is key to avoiding unexpected breakdowns and extending the working life of your implements, whilst making cracking into that spring work fast and hassle-free.
Aaron Watt, Service Manager for FarmChief Machinery talks us through some essential tips to keep your gear in top shape throughout winter.
Routine Maintenance ChecksDoing routine maintenance checks in winter is key to avoiding unexpected breakdowns and keeping your machinery reliable. Here’s what to keep an eye on: 1. Check fluids: Make sure all fluid levels, like engine oil, coolant, and hydraulic fluid, are topped up. Check your antifreeze levels to prevent anything from freezing up. 2. Battery Health: Cold weather can be tough on batteries. Test the battery voltage, clean the terminals to prevent corrosion, and consider using a battery maintainer to keep it charged. 3. Tyres: Look over your tyres for any wear and tear, and make sure they’re properly inflated. Cold temperatures can cause tyre pressure to drop, so regular checks are a must. Protecting Machinery From Frost And MoistureWinter brings frost and moisture, which can wreak havoc on your farm machinery. Taking preventive steps can save you from costly repairs and downtime. 1. Greasing Points: Proper lubrication prevents rust and keeps things running smoothly. Before storing your machinery for winter, grease all moving parts, especially bearings, joints, and other high-friction areas. Use good quality, cold-weather grease to ensure it stays effective in low temperatures. 2. Hydraulic Lines: Check hydraulic lines for any signs of wear, cracks, or leaks. Cold weather can make these lines brittle, increasing the risk of damage. Replace any worn or damaged lines and make sure all connections are tight. 3. Cover And Store Indoors: If you can, store your machinery indoors to protect it from the elements. If indoor storage isn’t an option, cover your equipment with a heavy-duty, weatherproof tarp to shield it from frost and moisture. Storing Machinery ProperlyProper storage is key to keeping your farm machinery in good shape during the winter months. 1. Clean Thoroughly: Before storing your machinery, give it a good clean to get rid of any dirt, mud, or crop residues that can hold moisture and cause rust or corrosion. Pay special attention to the undercarriage and hidden areas where debris can build up. 2. Drain Fuel Systems: For machinery that won’t be used over the winter, consider draining the fuel system to prevent fuel degradation and condensation. Alternatively, add a fuel stabilizer to keep the fuel from breaking down. |
